WDSA Pro Women’s Doubles Season Begins Tonight At The Philadelphia Country Club
by Rob Dinerman

Dateline October 12th ---- Top seeds Meredeth Quick and Steph Hewitt will begin their attempt to retain the No. 1 team ranking they won last season when they face off tonight at the Philadelphia Country Club at 8:00 against Joyce Davenport and Kasey Brown in the opening round of the $15,000 Philadelphia Open benefiting the Abramson Cancer Center at the University Of Pennsylvania. Quick and Hewitt enter this tournament as defending champions, having recorded their first-ever win (after four prior losses), and in straight sets at that, in the 2011 final against Suzie Pierrepont and Narelle Krizek, whom Quick/Hewitt would also later defeat in the Turner Cup final in May and who are the second-seeded pairing in this weekend’s eight-team draw.

Emily Lungstrum and Dana Betts, consistent semifinalists for the past several years in WDSA tour play, are also in the top half, and are slated to oppose Kat Grant and Alex Clark in the opening match of the evening at 5:00. Krizek and Pierrepont, the No. 1 ranked WDSA team in 2009-10, will play against Kelsey Engman and former Yale captain Amy Gross, with the winner to then face whichever team emerges from what will likely be the most competitive match of the night between the veteran Philadelphia duo of Amy Milanek and Dawn Gray and their young British-born though currently Philadelphia-based opponents Tina Rix and Carrie Hastings.

The semifinals will be held late Saturday afternoon with the final scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 PM.
