Teran Over Cornett For Women’s Pan Am Gold

- Samantha Teran of Mexico City dominated proceedings in each of her four matches, taking home women’s singles gold last night after a final round 11-6 11-4 11-6 win over Canada’s Samantha Cornett in the 2011 Pan American games in Guadalajara.

Teran had straight-setted  Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana in one semi while Cornett advanced to the final over teammate Miranda Ranieri 11-9 11-5 5-11 11-8.

Teran is ranked 14th in the world according to WISPA. Cornett, out of Ottawa, is 46th.

Samantha won the $28,000 WISPA Jericho Open in Vancouver in August, beating New Zealand’s Jaclyn Hawkes in the final.

The US women were eliminated from singles contention when top American Olivia Blatchford was beaten by Cornett in a four-game quarterfinal.
