October 1, 2011 - Harvard freshman Amanda Sobhy was a convincing straight-set winner yesterday over world #26 Emma Beddoes of Nottingham, England, in a first-round US Open qualifier at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on the campus of Philadelphia’s Drexel University.

Beddoes nearly converted the second game but was overmatched in the first and third, as the 18-year-old New Yorker, ranked #20 in the world, came away with an 11-3 11-9 11-2 victory in just 23 minutes of action.

Sobhy was the lone US woman to advance, as the four remaining American entrants in the women’s qualifying field didn’t fare as well in their first-round efforts.

34th-ranked Olivia Blatchford lost to #23 Delia Arnold of Malaysia 11-5 11-7 11-8 in 26 minutes.

Young Sabrina Sobhy was beaten by Hong Kong’s Joey Chan 11-5 11-3 11-6 in 20 minutes.

Niki Clement fell to Low Wee Wern of Malaysia  11-1 11-6 11-8 in 22 minutes.

And teenager Olivia Fiechter of Philadelphia lost to New Zealand’s Jaclyn Hawkes 11-5 11-9 11-5 in 23 minutes.

What remains startling about the women’s pro game, especially when the pairings involve players ranked outside the top-10, is how short the matches are.

Only one of yesterday's eight total first-round women’s US Open qualifying matches lasted longer than a half-hour.

In today’s final round of qualifying, Amanda has a tough but winnable match against 15th-ranked Jaclyn Hawkes. In her most recent outing, at last week’s Weymuller Open in New York, the 28-year-old from Auckland lost to world #2 Jenny Duncalf in a four-game first-round encounter.
