- Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo, Ontario, came back from a game down to defeat Silvia Angulo of Colombia and clinch the 2011 Pan American Games gold medal for Team Canada before a packed house yesterday at the Code Squash Complex in Guadalajara.

In the opening match, Samantha Cornett, of Deep River, Ontario, set the table with a four-set win over Cataline Pelaez. Cornett, at number two, lost the opening game and was down 6-2 in the second, but steadied her play and won nine consecutive points to win the game and take charge of the match.

Ranieri, playing the number one slot, won three tight games after losing the first in overtime.

Her victory included a bit of controversy, as she struck Angulo with a follow-through early in the first game, necessitating a medical time-out and eliciting an angry response from the Colombian.

Ranieri was able to bounce back in the gold medal match from a one-sided loss
in Thursday’s semifinals against Mexico to singles titlist Samantha Teran. Cornett and Stephanie Edmison came through in their matches as the Canadians pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Mexican women, sending them to the championship round.

The US Women’s Team of Olivia Blatchford, Maria Elena Ubina and Lily Lorentzen put forth a strong effort in the Games, running the table in pool play before being eliminated 2-1 by Colombia in the semis.

But in the end it was the deserving Canadian women beaming on the podium while "O Canada" was being played.
