Former World Junior Champion Amanda Sobhy of the US earned a place in
the $60,000 US Open main draw with a gritty five-set win last night
over 16th-ranked Jaclyn Hawkes of New Zealand.
In the last women’s qualifying match of the day, before a
partisan crowd at Philadelphia’s Drexel University, world #20
Sobhy won an 11-9 fourth game from 2-1 down and nursed home the fifth
in an entertaining 53 minute session: 8-11 11-7 7-11 11-9 11-8.
“Another good win over someone I’ve never beaten
before,” a delighted Sobhy told usopensquash.com.
“College
life (she is a freshman at Harvard) is obviously working out!”
Sobhy meets world #2 Jenny Duncalf of England tonight at 6pm EST in the
round-of-16.
“I played Jenny last year in the Australian Open,”
she
said. “I didn’t do very well, actually she
destroyed me, so
hopefully I’ll do better this time!”
Amanda will be joined in the main draw by Seattle’s Latasha
Khan, who received a wild card into the event.
Khan will face the eighth seed Camille Serme of France at noon EST.
Sobhy and Khan are the only two North Americans still standing in
either the women’s or men’s draw.
Christopher Gordon, the #3 American man, hung in for a game with
sixth-seeded Thierry Lincou of France in a first round match before
Lincou finished matters with increasing authority in 32
minutes:
11-9 11-5 11-6. Gordon had been wildcarded into the US Open main draw.
And a spirited run also ended in the men’s round-of-32 for
Canadian qualifier Shawn Delierre. He took 17th-ranked Englishman
Adrian Grant to an overtime first game before fading in the final two as Grant found his range: 12-10 11-5 11-4 (37 minutes).
“He’s very unorthodox and hard to read, it took me
a game
and a half to work him out,” Grant told usopensquash.com.
“Once I found my feet I managed to present my game to him and
I
felt more and more confident.”
