- Second-seeded Jenny Duncalf of County Yorks, England,  overcame a difficult first game before easing past 18-year-old top American Amanda Sobhy last night in the first round of the $60,000 WISPA US Open in Philadelphia.

Sobhy postioned herself to win the first game at 9-5 up, but Duncalf stiffened, won the game in overtime, and cruised to a 27-minute 12-10 11-6 11-5 victory.

Amanda was the last American, in either the women’s or men’s draw, still alive in the event. She had won two preliminary matches to qualify into the first round.

Earlier in the day, Seattle’s Latasha Khan, as a main draw wildcard, jumped to an unlikely two-zip lead against eight-seeded Camille Serme, but the Frenchwoman won a tense 11-9 third game and nursed home a win against the impressive 38-year-old Khan: 10-12 3-11 11-9 11-7 11-8.

Other than Sobhy’s two wins in the qualifying round, the 2011 US Open was a shutout for American squash.

The American men went a collective 0 - 7,  and the American women, other than Sobhy, went a collective 0 - 5.
