US Men Could Finish An Amended 6th In Worlds,
As Italy #1 Reportedly Fails Drug Test from DailySquashReport.com
November 18, 2011-
Italy’s number one player Stephane Galifi failed a routine drug
test administered around the time of the August World Team
Championships, it has been reported.
Italy finished sixth at the 2011 World Teams in Paderborn, Germany, one spot ahead of the US contingent.
If the test result is upheld, Italy’s results in the World Teams
will likely be removed from the record, and the US would thus back into
a sixth-place finish.
Italy beat the US team three-zip in head-to-head play in the event,
with Galifi prevailing over top-American Julian Illingworth at the
number one position.
Galifi has reportedly been suspended by the Italian Squash Federation,
though he is currently competing in the PSA Pittsburgh Open in
Pennsylvania.
He is 33 years old and ranked #62 in the world. He has also represented France in international play in the past.
This is the second recent controversy involving an Italian team member.
Earlier this month, Italy’s #2 player Davide Bianchetti received
a conduct disqualification during his first round World Open match in
Rotterdam.
A group of PSA referees then lobbied for a lifetime ban against
Bianchetti, who apparently has had a history of unsportsmanlike match
behavior.
