Day Two Report, BSPA Solent Classic
by Martyn Collins-Ballands

November 19, 2011
- Sunil Seth v Sho Miyakawa 15/13 11/7 11/1
A high paced first game with neither player willing to give up on well executed drops and tight length, with Sunil just squeezing the first game. The second game was again high paced with Sunil volleying more putting pressure on Sho’s  game to take a 2-0 lead. In the third game Sho’s wheels start to come off with Sunil moving into top gear, volleying to all four corners and finishing with a high volley drop into the front forehand corner-game and match!

Alex Phillips v Damon Chase 11/3 11/6 11/6
Damon, feeling the effects of this morning’s match, lost the first game against an inform Alex Phillips quite quickly. Frustration entering Damon’s game, throwing the racket like a majorette’s baton, and Alex finishing the match in a Usain Bolt style finish in twenty minutes.

Andy Whipp v Gary Harris 11/8 11/4 11/7
Andy arrived late due to horrendous traffic and went straight on court. Gary came firing out of the blocks and went 8-4 up but Andy slowly got out of the car and started to move Gary and take the 1st game. After that it was a bit one way traffic but Gary got stuck in and played well even though he lost 3-0.

Paul Rawden v Jamie Matthews 11/8 13/15 11/4 11/7
Again Jamie was very steady and deliberate whereas Paul wanted to go for winners. The steadiness won to start with and then the shots won. Paul got tired and asked for some interesting lets but Jamie prevailed 3-1

James Simpson v Tristan Eysele11/9 9/11 7/11 12/10 11/6
James started where he finished this morning’s game with not many unforced errors early doors. Then Tristan made in roads half way into the game. James, finding Tristan deceptive, had to work hard to read a brutal volley at nine all. Tristan won it with a dying backhand cross court drive- 10-9, then an early unforced error from James meant game to Tristan.
The third game went in favour of Tristan who put in a great effort; then a tight fourth game with more shots coming from Tristan, but James  played with controlled length and took it into the fifth game.  The last game contained good shots from James with Tristan hanging on in there with dogged determination, but to no avail, as James ground out the match to gain victory.

Tim Vail v Dan Zammit-Lewis 11/3 11/6 11/0
Top coach Tim Vail was not looking to spend much time on court. Tim, with his experience, really took over against the up and coming aspiring Daniel.

Lewis Walters v Sam Levin 7/11 11/7 11/7 14/12
The first game went to Sam with good solid squash being played plus some added errors from Lewis, maybe jetlag from Nottingham! Sam played a controlled game in the second but Lewis seemed to be finding his range and weight of shot to take the second. Much of the same in the third, Lewis winning the match 11-7. The fourth went the same way until nine all, then the game seemed to come alive and became competitive with Lewis emerging the winner and taking the game 14-12. Go and get your shoes Lewis-last train to London goes pretty soon. Well played Sam.

Neil Chambers v Brandon Hanley 7/11 9/11 12/10 11/7 6/11
This could have been the match of this round with both players playing Hampshire Premier League. Brandon showed great concentration and took the first game 11-7. Neil came back in the second game and put some pressure on Brandon with tight exchanges in the front right corner. Brandon composed himself to take the game 11-9.
A determined Neil strived to take the third game and then takes an early lead in the fourth game. Brandon’s frustration starts to show as the match goes to a fifth game, but he manages to raise his game to take it to a 3-2 win.

A great day’s squash-who’d be in Hong Kong or Pittsburgh when you could be in sunny Lee?!
