Choong Ousts Scott In Saskatoon, Canada PSA Upset from PSA Media
25 November 2011-
Malaysian qualifier Kam Hing Choong produced the biggest upset on the
opening day of action in the Prairie Autohaus Saskatoon Boast Open in
Canada when he downed third seed Eddie Charlton to claim an unexpected
place in the quarter-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash
event in its tenth year at the YMCA in Saskatoon.
From two games down, the 22-year-old from Ipoh Perak clawed his way
back into the game to draw level. After an accidental collision at
six-all in the decider, both took a three-minute injury break - but
after only two further rallies, Charlton was forced to retire - giving
Choong the match 8-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 7-6 (ret.) after 55 minutes.
Alejandro Garbi Caro became the second qualifier to survive the first
round when he outlasted France's Geoffrey Demont 11-5, 11-7, 8-11,
9-11, 11-5 in 74 minutes.
The 28-year-old Spaniard progresses to meet Zac Alexander. The
top-seeded Australian defeated local hope Matthew Serediak, a
27-year-old from Toronto, 12-10, 11-8, 11-6 in 34 minutes.
But Canadian interest is assured through to the semi-finals after
fourth seed Andrew Schnell beat Australian Scott Arnold 6-11, 11-9,
11-2, 11-5. The Calgary-born 20-year-old will now meet fellow
countryman Thomas Brinkman, a 6-11, 10-12, 14-12, 11-6, 11-4 winner
over Scottish qualifier Jamie Macaulay.
