Milt Russ Hardball Singles Harvard Club of NY

In advance of their Thanksgiving family gatherings, a gregarious group of hardball singles veterans convened at the Harvard Club in NYC for the annual Milt Russ Memorial Squash tournament, the weekend of November 18th-20th.  The complicated format allowed 6 matches per person, over the 3 days of camaraderie and competition.

Tefft Smith of DC prevailed for the Veterans Championship, winning a hard fought finals over Paul Chan of Atlantic City, 15-12, (9), 8, 9.  Tefft had survived the semi-finals, losing the first two games being mystified by the left handed shot making of Charlie Kimball of NYC, before powering through to victory, with hard serves and tight rails to good length, (8) (6), 9, 9, 5.  Tefft had defeated Terry Eagle, who flew in from California to promote the Cate Invitational (Jan 13-15, 2012) in Santa Barbara, CA, (8), 9, 7, 5.

Paul Chan got to the Finals besting the always tenacious Henry Steinglass of NYC, 12, 10, 10, capitalizing on a series of devastating cross court drops.

Henry had a long, tough match with John Cosmi of New Jersey, 18-14, 12, (12), 5, Eagle did double duty, winning the Senior Championship, with a thrilling victory over Jonathan Kohn of NYC, (8), (9), 13, 7, 4, after beating Fred Clare of NYC 17-16, 18-17, 11.  Clare had victories over Bruce Elfenbein of Philadelphia, 8, 13, (11), (10), 10 and over Hal Pearson of NYC, 10, (15-17), 11, 12.  Kohn had a great win over Nick Beilenson of NYC, 13, (8), 12, 8.

There is still an active circuit of age division players up and down the east coast. Also becoming popular among players is using the hardball singles and doubles ball on the international size court.
