Frost Denies Schoor In Tenerife by Howard Harding 19 December 2011-
Jens Schoor suffered his first ever defeat in a PSA World Tour final
when he lost to Kristian Frost Olesen in the climax of the XIII Canary
Islands Open at Centro Insular de Squash de Tenerife in Santa Cruz on
the Spanish island of Tenerife.
The final of the PSA Challenger 5 event was a clash between the event's
top two seeds. Olesen, the favourite from Denmark overcame
fourth-seeded German Raphael Kandra in straight games in the
semi-finals to reach his second Tour final of the year without dropping
a game.
Second seed Schoor, the German number two, despatched England's No3
seed Charles Sharpes 3/0 in the other semi to make it to his fifth Tour
final.
Since August 2010, the 24-year-old from Koblenz has appeared in finals
in Australia, Greece, Spain and Ukraine - with 100% success in all four.
And underdog Schoor survived the first game after a tie-break to open up an early lead in the final.
But Olesen, ranked six places higher, battled back to regain control
before finally closing out the match 11-13, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8.
"I am very, very, very happy about my performance today," exclaimed the
exuberant Dane after winning the second Tour title of his career.
"I managed to get through in the end. I lost the first game after being
up 10-8. That was very disappointing, but I stepped up the court from
that point and gave it my best.
"It was close all the way, but I just got a couple of points ahead
toward the end of the three last games," added the 22-year-old from
Odense.
Schoor is already planning revenge: "All credit to Kristian - he played
really well today. Congratulations for winning the tournament - but
next time I will try to beat him again.
"He got pretty much all my attacking shots back and made it really hard
for me to get any points off him. The same happened in the third. We
were even to the end of the game and then Kristian pulled away a couple
of points and won the game from there.
"In the fourth I got a little lead of two points in the beginning, but I couldn't keep that lead to the end."
