US Men’s Team Member Gilly Lane Retires From Competition from DailySquashReport.com
December 21, 2011-
Philadelphia’s Gilly Lane, a member of several US national
men’s teams and currently ranked 92nd in the world by the PSA,
announced his retirement yesterday, citing ongoing back problems.
The 26-year-old Lane played collegiately at Penn and turned pro after
graduating in 2007, living and training for a time in Holland. His
career-high world ranking was #48.
He won 25 PSA matches since January 2010. His best win, and arguably
one of the best wins ever by an American man, came in March of 2010
when he upset then world number 7 Peter Barker of London in the $50K
National Bank International in Montreal.
Lane’s back problems intensified throughout 2011, and he was only
able to represent the US team in one match at the World Team
Championships in Germany this summer, defeating Peter Reiko of
Switzerland in what proved to be the key win in the US team’s 2-1
pool victory.
Gilly issued the following statement on his Facebook page:
“It's been a tough couple months struggling with this back
problem and today is even tougher. I have decided to retire from the
PSA Tour due to the injury I suffered in July. I think the time is
right to begin to pursue other avenues and start the next phase of my
life. I want to thank Tommy Berden, Lucas Buit, Floris Minnaert, John
White, Natalie Grinham for their coaching and constant support. Thanks
to US Squash for their backing and efforts to put us in the right
position to succeed. Also LJ Anjema and Cameron Pilley for being great
friends and role models and my parents and family for their endearing
support. It wouldn't have been possible without my family and I owe
them everything.”
