Canadian National Team Championships Recap, Alberta & Quebec Victorious by Danny DaCosta

Team Alberta (Men) and Team Quebec (Women) captured the 2012 Canadian
Men’s Team & Women’s Team Championships over the weekend. The
Canadian Men’s Team Championships held at the London Squash Racquets
Club featured 12 teams from all over the country including the return
of a Canadian Forces Team after a 7-year absence in the event.
The Women’s Team Championship held at the Tower at Saint Mary’s
University in Halifax, Nova Scotia featured 8 teams including two teams
from host province Nova Scotia.
The Men’s National Team Champions Alberta comprised of Andrew Schnell,
Graeme Schnell and Grayson Wicher defeated host province Ontario in the
finals 2-1. Alberta’s #2 player, Graeme Schnell defeated
Ontario’s number 2 Matthew Serediak 8-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-4 in the
closely contested opening match. In the second encounter, Alberta’s #1
player Andrew Schnell defeated Ontario’s #1 Fred Reid 11-8, 11-1, 11-9
to claim the title. Ontario’s Ian Power defeated Grayson Wicher
7-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-4, 11-5.
In the 3rd place match, Manitoba defeated Quebec 2-1 to claim the
bronze medal. Justin Todd of Manitoba defeated David Phillips of Quebec
11-6, 11-4, 4-11,11-8, while David Glass of Manitoba defeated Eric
Dingle of Quebec 11-9, 6-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-5 and Maxim Blouin of
Quebec defeated Evan Mancer 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7 in the third pairing.

At the 2012 Canadian Women’s Team Championships in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, Team Quebec captured the title defeating Team Ontario in the
final 2-1. The Quebec team featured Alexandra Norman, Genevieve
Lessard and Anne-Christine Lajoje. Alex Norman defeated fellow
national team member Stephanie Edmison of Ontario 11-8, 13-11, 11-5 in
the opening match. Genevieve Lessard of Quebec defeated Seanna
Keating of Ontario 12-10, 11-3, 12-10 while Ontario’s Micaala Seth
defeated Quebec’s Anne-Christine Lajoie 11-2, 11-5, 11-7 in the final
match.
In the 3rd place match, Manitoba defeated Alberta to claim the bronze
medal 3-0. Alix Younger of Manitoba defeated Susie King of
Alberta 11-5, 12-10, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10. Manitoba’s #2 player Tara
Chawla defeated Kristina Jewitt of Alberta 11-7, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6,
while, Manitoba’s Ashley Malenchak defeated Alberta’s Kathy Conquergood
11-13, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9 to give Manitoba the bronze medal sweep.

Club in Gatineau, QC on January 13 – 15, 2012 and the Canadian Junior
Doubles Championships are taking place at the Granite Club in Toronto
from January 13 – 15, 2012.
