Howard Davis Memorial Hardball Recap
by Paul Chan

January 15, 2013 - Last weekend, the Howard Davis Memorial Hardball Tournament was held at the Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness Club in Somers  Point, New Jersey. The tournament is a spinoff of the famed Atlantic Coast Squash Racquets Championships.  The Howard Davis Memorial is played on international courts with the Austral ball ever since the hardball courts at Chalfonte-Haddon Hall were closed when the Merv Griffin Resorts Casino in Atlantic City changed hands.

For the third consecutive year, Gary Yaeger of Philadelphia captured the crown by besting local stalwart, Tom Ackerman 3-1 in the finals. The play was dominated by hard serving and quick reflexes, and surprisingly long rallies. The Austral ball, which is the ball of choice in the wider courts,  gave spectators the chance to see how entertaining hardball can still be.

Yaeger and Ackerman had swept to the finals after defeating Tefft Smith of Washington DC and Paul Chan of Atlantic City, respectively, without losing a game.
