El Tayeb Over Ubina In Five In $35K WSA Greenwich Open Qualifying

- Recently-crowned US Junior Open champion Maria Elena Ubina of Stamford, CT, nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback last night against World Junior Champion Nour El Tayeb of Egypt in the first round qualifying of the $35K Greenwich Open, before losing 11-6 in the fifth.

The final tally was 13-11 11-9 9-11 4-11 11-6.

The 18-year-old El Tayeb is ranked 20th on the pro women's world tour. Ubina, who recently turned 17 and has played largely junior events, is ranked 219th.

In other first round qualifying, Harvard's Amanda Sobhy advanced in straight sets over Samantha Cornett of Canada.

Also advancing to today's qualifying finals were Seattle's Latasha Khan and Dipika Pallikal of India.

Americans Olivia Blatchford and Sabrina Sobhy were each beaten in three.
