Power Protege Maria Toor Pakay Advances To TOC Women's Qualifying Finals

- 21-year-old Maria Toor Pakay of Toronto turned back Czechoslovakian Olga Ertlova 11-9 in the fourth yesterday to advance to today's qualifying finals of the $27K WSA Tournament Of Champions in New York City.

Pakay, who now trains with Jonathon Power in Toronto after having overcome a difficult situation in her native Pakistan, won last week's Liberty Bell Open in Philadelphia, her first WSA tour title.

In other first round qualifiers yesterday:

Gaby Huber of Switzerland straight-setted Long Island's Sabrina Sobhy;

Czech Lucie Fialova downed Canada's Alexandra Norman;

Canada's Samantha Cornett beat Milo Heijden of Holland;

Maria Ranieri of Canada needed five to get past Ahn Chan of Korea;

German Sina Wall beat Egypt's Salma Hany in four;

Lauren Selby of England straighted American Kristen Lange;

And popular Connecticut pro Suzie Pierrepont of England beat Misaki Kobayashi of Japan 14-12 in the fourth.
