Coll Denies Home Hero Corren On Australia Day by Howard Harding 26 January 2014
- New Zealander Paul Coll denied the organisers of the Australia Day
Squash Challenge home success on Australia Day for the second year in a
row when he upset top seed Mike Corren in today's final of the PSA
World Tour Challenger 5 event at Ipswich PCYC in Ipswich in Queensland.
Defending champion
Coll, the 21-year-old No2 seed from Christchurch, reached the third
Tour final of his career when he beat Hong Kong's No.5 seed Cheuk Yan
Tang in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, in the
other semi, 39-year-old Corren saw off fellow Australian Sunil Seth in
straight games to notch up the 69th Tour final appearance of his
illustrious career.
But hopes of extending
his haul of Tour titles to 48 just a month before his 40th birthday
were dashed for Corren when Coll clinched his 12-10, 11-2, 11-3 final
victory after 40 minutes.
The title triumph extended Coll's unbeaten run in Tour final to give the World No.89 the third Tour title of his career.
