Didn't quite make it to "Wafe 101"

100 year-old Wafe Risner
in the green shirt...

January 30, 2013

Born on April 17th 1912, although not a squash-player himself, but a good friend of women's professional squash, Wafe Reisner passed away yesterday, (Tuesday, January 29, 2013) less than three-months shy of his 101st birthday. He'll sure be missed!

Wafe would always ask me to let him know when “the girls” were coming to play a professional squash tournament. Of course, I would always make sure we had a reserved seat for him in the front row for every WISPA (WSA) event we hosted.

The last women's professional squash event hosted by The LAAC was the 2008 Epstein Becker & Green LA Open, which Samantha Teran won.

And who would you guess was in the front row, watching every point, every game, every match of the women’s pro event? You guessed it – it was our good friend of women’s squash at The Los Angeles Athletic Club, the inimitable Wafe Risner!

The last time I saw and talked with Wafe was at a professional handball tournament the club was hosting less than a year ago. Although unable to “run” around, he was his old self, watching the professional handball players with his hawk-like blue eyes commenting on the skills and strategy of these (other) fine athletes.

Wafe's last words to our LAAC club members just a week ago was "Thanks for keeping me alive all these years." Rest in piece Wafe!
