Squash Community To Squash-a-Mile For Sport Relief
by Scarlett Smith

UK, Friday 17th February:  England Squash & Racketball has today launched one of the sports biggest charity campaigns with the announcement of the ‘Squash-a-Mile’ Challenge for Sport Relief 2012.

With around 500,000 regular players in the UK, Squash-a-mile challenges players across the whole country to run the Sport Relief Mile…….. wall to wall within the confines of a squash court.

At 9.75m in length, the challenge is to run (walk or crawl ……) 165 lengths of a squash court in the UK’s fastest time and ESR is hopeful of raising at least a five figure donation for Sport Relief.

Conceived in 2010 by former professional player, Tim Garner, Squash-a-Mile is the unique and extremely challenging variation on the Sport Relief Mile and Garner’s 8 minutes 53 seconds is the benchmark to aspire to.

Garner is up for the challenge once more and quipped; “Squash players are so competitive and this will channel some of that energy in to a really good cause.  It is very challenging – in fact it is circuit training in the extreme, but the crowd really get behind runners and I would be disappointed if we could set a new ‘unofficial’ world record this year.”

Players are required to raise a minimum of £20 in sponsorship money before running their own squash-a-mile with a friend or adjudicator to confirm their time. Sponsorship funds can be paid in to www.justgiving.com/sportreliefsquashamile

Should they fancy a crack at the Squash-a-Mile Grand Final at the Canary Wharf Classic (Friday 23rd March 2012), players can submit their times to ESR at mytime@englandsquashandracketball.com, with the closing date for entries Midnight on Friday 16th March 2012.

The 165 lengths must include a hand touch at each end and the attempt must be witnessed by a playing partner, spectator or club official to be eligible for entry to the CWC run-off.

The players with the fastest four times in the country will be invited to the Final of the Canary Wharf Classic to kick-off Sport Relief weekend…….possibly on their knees!
