New York Rothenberg Open for 2015 Registration
by Corey Modeste

February 27, 2015 - The Rothenberg Squash Tournament, named in honor of former MSRA/NY Squash President Michael Rothenberg, returns for 2015. The event will be held in Brooklyn Heights at the Eastern Athletic Club on April 10-12, 2015.  The tournament will comprise men's and women's amateur skill level draws from beginner to 6.0.  New for this year will be the addition of a men's pro draw featuring some of the top local pros. Confirmed to attend are Alister Walker (ranked #24 in world), Ryan Cuskelly (#45), Wael El Hindi (fmr. #8), Christopher Gordon (#57)and top collegiate player Ramit Tandon.  "We're thrilled that generous sponsor support will allow us to add a pro draw this year", said tournament director Corey Modeste, "I'm not sure we could organize a tournament with such top talent anywhere but New York City."

The pro tournament adds to the festive nature of the tournament, which includes a player party with large buffet dinner and open bar. The party is a great time to relax with fellow players and watch some amazing pro squash up close.  There will also be a fun racquet sport addition whereby squash tournament players will be able to also play in a free table tennis tournament organized around the squash draws. "The EAC is a great lounge space to relax in between squash matches. We'll have the pool table going in addition to two ping pong tables in use for a fun mini tournament", said Modeste.

The Rothenberg is more than just a tournament, it is also run for a good cause. The Rothenberg Foundation is in its third year of raising money to fund scholarships for underprivileged students graduating from urban squash programs. Prior scholarship recipients have matriculated at top schools, including Mount Holyoke and Trinity College.  Scholarship recipients are recognized for academic excellence and civic leadership and contribution.  More information about the Foundation and the scholarship can be found here.

The Rothenberg will be run by an experienced tournament team including Corey Modeste, Eastern Athletic Club Head Pro Adam Walker and former MSRA/NY Squash Executive Director Kenny Scher. This team has run tournaments in the New York City area since 1994 and will be running the Rothenberg from start to finish. "The Eastern Athletic Club was Michael Rothenberg's home club and we are pleased to host the event this year," said Walker.
