March Women's World Rankings Released from WSA Media March 1, 2012- The WSA March rankings didn’t provide any major changes to the top 20 with only a handful of players switching places.
Nicol David made it another month at the top of the rankings (she is
now at 68 months) after winning her 59th WSA title at the Cleveland
Classic. David gained revenge over Laura Massaro in this year’s final,
coming through in four games, after the British Champion had upset the
world number 1 in last year’s final. Massaro drops back to 4th in the
rankings as Madeline Perry jumps back ahead. Jenny Duncalf
unfortunately had to retire due to a knee injury in the quarter finals
of the Cleveland Classic but has cause to celebrate as she makes it 2
straight years at world number 2.
Also in the top 20, Kasey Brown moves back above Natalie Grinham to
number 7 while Camille Serme moves back above Annie Au to number 9.
Donna Urquhart reached the Cleveland Classic quarter finals after she
stunned Brown and moves back up one place to 14.
Outside the top 20, Amanda Sobhy, a full time student at Harvard, moved
back up 2 places to 26 after reaching her first Gold semi final at the
Cleveland Classic. Emily Whitlock, another 18 year old, won her 1st WSA
title at the Savcor Finnish Open in February without conceding a game.
This title moves Whitlock up 1 place to a career high of 32.
Alison Waters made her return to action at the British National
Championships after almost a year out of action due to ongoing injury
problems. Waters made it to the final losing narrowly to Massaro and
showing she is getting back to her best. Waters picked up valuable
points and moves back up 6 places to 35 as she looks to re-establish
herself back near the top of the game.
There were further career highs for: surprise Delaware semi-finalist
Lauren Selby at no.44, twice finalist in 2012 Liu Tsz-Ling at no.49,
Tesni Evans at no.55, Aussies’ Maggy Marshall, Christine Nunn and
Vanessa Pickard at no.71, no.78 and no.80, Sabrina Sobhy at no.87,
Chloe Mesic at no.90, Sally Skaarenborg at no.97 and French Junior Open
Champion Julia Lecoq at no.98.
