Dateline March 20th, 2012---
The 2012 Ridley’s Canadian National Doubles Championships will be held
during the weekend of April 12-15, with Mayfair Lakeshore serving as
the headquarters venue and a half-dozen other clubs in the downtown
Toronto area providing their facilities as well. This will mark the
78th edition of this tournament, which began in 1934 and has been held
every year since then other than in 1938 and which added a women’s
event as well in 1985. The defending champions in the Men’s Open
division, Michael Pirnak and Willie Hosey, were the No. 2 ranked team
on the ISDA tour during the 2002-03 season, and the 2011 Women’s
Open winners were Steph Hewitt (who also captured this prestigious
title with Narelle Krizek in 2007 and with Jess DiMauro in 2009 and
2010) and Stephanie Edmison.
There are 10 competitive men’s draws (the Open and age-group flights
every five years from 40-and-over to 80-and-over) and five women’s
draws (Open and 40’s, 45’s, 50’s and 55’s), and feed-in Consolation
flights guarantee every team a minimum of three matches. In addition,
there are social events planned starting Thursday evening and
continuing straight through the weekend. The entry fee is $150 ($100
for entrants under 30 years old) and registration forms are available
on the Squash Canada web site, www.squash.ca.
The sign-up deadline is April 5th. This is always an amazingly
competitive and enjoyable weekend of squash and a terrific way to
conclude the doubles season.
