El Hindi On The Bubble As PST Launches Detroit Tour Championships Push From The PST:
March 26, 2012-
Wael El Hindi made world-wide news when he signed with Pro Squash Tour
last December. The 31 year-old Egyptian is one of the world's most
colorful and, at times, controversial players. Signing him mid-season
was big for PST.
However, he did not compete in tournament action until last month's Buffalo Wild Wings Open, which he won.
Hindi wants to compete for the season championship in Detroit. But does
he have enough time to earn the points needed to be invited?
PST Commissioner Joe McManus thinks so, but adds that Hindi needs to go
deep in the draw at his next two events. Hindi is registered for the
Providence Open and the American Open.
"We will invite our top 8 points leaders to compete in Detroit for the
season championship," said McManus. Hindi could make it but he needs to
do well at the Providence Open and the American Open."
If Hindi wins in Providence, he'll earn 420 points. He'll earn 560
points for each match he wins in the American Open. If he reaches the
finals of the American Open, he'll earn more than 2,000 points. But the
American Open draw will be the deepest of the season by far. Reaching
the finals is not a guarantee.
Winning 2,000 plus points would put him in the top 8 today, but other
players are fighting for points as well, and their totals will rise in
April as well.
"I would expect a player with 2,250 points to feel comfortable in their
ability to make it to Detroit. 2,000 could do it. Below that, there is
some uncertainty," concluded McManus.
Players from 28 countries will have competed in tournament action over
the past year. PST's season began last August in San Diego and will
finish the last weekend of April in Tuxedo Park, NY.
