March 27, 2012-
Rahmat Khan, Jahangir Khan's cousin and coach throughout Jahangir's
illustrious career, is opening (with partners Welshman Gareth Webber,
former assistant coach at Yale - and Praveen Kankariya an Indian-born
CEO of a software company in Silicon Valley) a squash academy with
eight international courts in Los Gatos, California, an
incorporated town in Santa Clara County.
The facility was originally a 20-year-old 300,000 square foot racquetball club with 19 courts.
Khan and Webber said: "We are hoping to fill the courts with camps,
after-school programs, training and coaching for elite players."
Rahmat Khan was a great professional squash player in his own right. In
his early days he reached a career high of 12th in the world rankings.
However, following the sudden death of Jahangir's brother Torsam, he
sacrificed his career to coach his cousin Jahangir. His dedication was
successful! In 1981 the 17 year-old Jahangir became the youngest player
ever to win the World Open. This tournament victory marked the start of
an unbeaten run by Jahangir which lasted for five years and over 555
matches. Jahangir won a total of six World Open titles and a record 10
British Open titles during his career.
