Job Opening: Urban Program Squash Director, Chicago

Posted March2, 2012

Who We Are
METROsquash is an urban squash and education program located on the South Side of Chicago that uses the unique combination of squash instruction, academic tutoring, mentoring, community service and cultural enrichment to empower students to reach their full academic, athletic and personal potential. METROsquash is modeled after other successful urban squash and education programs in Boston, New York and Philadelphia and is part of the National Urban Squash and Education Association which has 10 member programs across the country.

Location
METROsquash students practice at the Henry Crown Field House at the University of Chicago. Classrooms and office space are located one block south of the squash courts in the University Church. The program has grown from 10 students in 2005 to 85 students in 2012, and METROsquash plans to continue its growth with the building of a new, stand-alone facility that will house 7 singles and 1 doubles squash court, plus 4 classrooms and office space.

The Squash Director plays a critical role in motivating students to join the program (squash is the hook that draws them in) and keeps them motivated to develop their squash abilities.
Responsibilities
•    Create and maintain a results-driven, structured, and fun learning environment for students
•    Plan and implement squash programming for 85 students in 5th through 12h grades during the school year, and 50 students in 5th through 8th grades during METROsquash Summer Enrichment Camp
•    Recruit volunteers to assist with squash practices and provide them with daily direction regarding lesson plans
•    Coordinate weekend squash competitions and summer squash camps, including travel planning
•    Work with Middle School and High School Directors to plan and implement weekday and weekend fitness programming for middle school students
•    Work with Middle School and High School Directors to ensure squash progress for all students by finding opportunities for students to gain access to court time outside of regular practice
•    Plan and implement 3-4 METROsquash tournaments per year including a METROsquash Junior Open, a METROsquash Chicago-Style Open (juniors) and a ProAm Doubles tournament
•    Strengthen METROsquash relations with the squash community
•    Assist METROsquash college applicants in building relationships with college squash coaches
•    Collaborate with all staff members to ensure a fully integrated approach to academic, athletic and life skills development in each student
As non-profit approaching its 8th season, flexibility in taking on a variety of projects is expected. Eager participation in the following areas may include, but will not be limited to:
•    Assist grant writing team in gathering and preparing information, compiling results and writing proposals as relates to the squash program
•    Assist with successful implementation of an annual fundraising gala
•    Assist with other fundraising events and activities throughout the year
Compensation will be commensurate with experience. In addition to a salary, the following is included:
•    Full medical coverage, including dental
•    20 vacation days per year (25 in second year)
•    Cell phone and education stipends

Due to the nature of the program, the work week runs Monday through Friday from 10AM to 6PM and a half day on Saturday or Sunday (depending on squash court availability). Staff members receive a full weekend off (Saturday/Sunday) at least one out of every four weeks.
