March 30, 2013 - Former Malaysian professional squash-player Azlan Iskandar has joined forces with the Negri Sembilan Squash Association (NSSA) to develop the game in the state.

Azlan, who announced his retirement as a professional squash player last month, said the Academy (AISA) and NSSA will work together in the promotion and development of squash.

Azlan announced the partnership during NSSA’s family day carnival at the Rasah Kemayan Club in Seremban recently.

Besides a donation of RM20,000, Azlan also presented 200 copies of his book — “Basic Practical Training for Squash” in Bahasa Malaysia for distribution to schools in Negri.

“This is the beginning of more collaborations between NSSA and AISA. I am working hard to ensure sufficient funds and more events to keep the sport going,’’ he said.

NSSA vice-president S. Thiagarajah said the NSSA had been very active in the promotion and development of squash at grassroots.

“We have also introduced a junior league for players to gain competition exposure and unearth new talents,’’ said Thiagarajah.

The three-leg league is held in Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah and Seremban. The NSSA also conducted a Talent Identification program in schools to recruit players for weekend training sessions held at the Seremban two Courts.

NSSA president Nik Razeen Daud said the limited courts in Negri Sembilan had not deterred their efforts in promoting squash.

“It is our fervent hope that the state government will seriously look into adding more squash courts to encourage more people to take up the sport,” said Nik Razeen.

Among the events held at the family day were a treasure hunt, tele-match and coloring contest for children. Thiagarajah said the great support from members made the carnival an enjoyable event.

"Hopefully, it will be an annual event to foster greater camaraderie among the squash fraternity in the state,’’ he added.

Azlan also gave away the prizes to Ahsha Phujaa Pillay and Aishwina Ramesh, the winners of the coloring contest, and the top three teams in the treasure hunt.
