NYAC Invitational Update: Spectacular Pierrepont/Krizek Run Ended In Semis By Rob Dinerman, for DailySquashReport.com
Dateline March 4th, 2012---
The string of outstanding wins that had enabled Suzie Pierrepont and
Narelle Krizek to advance all the way to the semifinal round of one of
the highest-end men's invitationals of the squash-doubles season, the
third annual New York Athletic Club Invitational, was finally brought
to a close on Sunday morning when this pair of talented women were
defeated in a highly competitive albeit three-game match (15-9, 11 and
13) by former mid-2000's Penn classmates Graham Bassett and Gilly Lane.
Pierrepont and Krizek had shocked top seeds Julian Illingworth and Tim
Wyant in four games in the round of 16, then triumphed in a 3-0
quarterfinal over Peter Kelly and Marshall Sebring, and they challenged
Bassett and Lane throughout, with Krizek nailing reverse-corner and
shallow rail winners and Pierrepont lashing her drives and retrieving
beautifully. However, Bassett and Lane were able to apply enough
offensive pressure, especially in the closing stages of several of
those games, to pound their way into the final, where they were
scheduled to oppose Josh Schwartz and Hamed Anvari, five-game winners
in the bottom-half semi over defending champions Dylan Patterson and
Steve Scharff.
Less than a half-hour after her semifinal with Bassett/Lane had
finished, Krizek was back on court for the women's final, where she and
partner Lee Belknap were out-lasted in five games by top seeds Dana
Betts and Emily Lungstrum.
