Dulmage/DiMauro Capture Canadian Mixed Doubles Title by Rob Dinerman, for DailySquashReport.com
Dateline March 6th, 2012---
Unseeded Scott Dulmage and Jessica DiMauro emerged victorious over a
strong seven-team field at the Toronto Cricket Club this past weekend
and regained the Canadian Mixed Doubles title that they had earned
during the four-year period from 2005-08. Dulmage, a standout pro
during the 1990’s who partnered Gary Waite to the 1994 North American
Open Doubles crown, and DiMauro, a frequent women’s Canadian National
Doubles title-holder throughout the mid-2000’s before back injuries
frequently sidelined her in recent years, defeated second seeds Seanna
Keating and Eric Baldwin in four games in the semis and then triumphed
by a 15-9 15-11 16-13 tally over Chris Deratnay and Stephanie Edmison
in the final. Deratnay and Edmison had rallied to an exciting
route-going (15-8 10-15 12-15 18-15 15-13) victory in their semi over
the top-seeded three-time defending champions James and Steph Hewitt.
In addition to the Open draw, there were four age-group
tournaments, with Michele Ramsey and Scott Dormer fulfilling their top
seeding in the 40’s, but only barely, by first rallying from
two-games-to-one down in their semifinal match with Tom Hayes and
Laurie Krol and then winning the final, 18-16 in the fourth, over Jeff
Anderson and Kirsteen Burton, who themselves had been pushed to a fifth
game in their semifinal against Carol Stewart and Peter Naughton, 16-15
fifth-game quarterfinal winners over John Hall and Tammie Sangster.
The 50’s flight similarly saw the top seeds challenged
throughout but ultimately coming through, as Jim Paton and Leslie
Freeman survived first a semifinal fifth-set tiebreaker (16-14) against
Pat Richardson and Susan Douglas and then a final with Al Hunt and Jann
Taylor whose 15-11 18-15 13-15 17-16 stat line speaks for itself. The
55’s flight, in which Lolly Gillen and Jay Gillespie took both matches
of their three-team round-robin in straight games, was a little more
routine, as was the four-team 60’s round-robin, in which Brian Murray
and Jean DeMarco lost but a single game in their trio of matches. Next
up is the Canadian National Doubles Championships, scheduled for the
weekend of April 13-15 in downtown Toronto.
