May 10 2011  A trio of friends attempting to “squash” two world records in marathon matches to raise £2,500 for charity have succeeded.

Ian Charles, 49, from Whitchurch, Cardiff, played against multiple opponents for 30 hours to set a brand new record, which will enter the Guinness Book of Records.

Matthew Lloyd-Lewis, 34, from Pengam Green, and 29-year-old Paul Duffy, of Cardiff Bay, played a continuous match for 30 hours to beat the record of 26 hours and 30 minutes, set by a Dutch pair.

Meanwhile, two men trying to beat the Guinness World record by completing a charity pool marathon were forced to stop early after suffering hallucinations.

Chris Whiles and Chris Rees were hoping to complete the 80-hour pool game for Cancer Research Wales but only managed 46 hours. The duo were trying to beat a recently-set record of 75 hours and 13 minutes with their attempt at Porth’s Station Hotel.

Chris said: “We wanted to carry on, but just couldn’t. We could barely see the pool table after 36 hours. We were hallucinating. We would have gone on but we just were not happy and our health comes first. We were surprised about how difficult it was. We had back pain and blisters on our fingers. It was a learning curve for both of us.”

He said they were still hoping to raise at least £1,600 for the charity once the money is counted.
