Walker, Razik Head Field In Hyder Quarterfinals Tonight
By Rob Dinerman for DailySquashReport.com Dateline May 13th - New York City-Top
two seeds Alister Walker and defending champion Shahier Razik each
swept to 3-0 victories in their respective round of 16 matches Thursday
evening and will head into this weekend’s action as solid
favorites to meet Sunday afternoon in the final of the 43rd Quentin
Hyder Invitational, the longest continuously running annual
international-ball tournament in the United States. Walker, who subdued
the exciting Trinity-bound teenage Egyptian Mohamed El-Sherbini, will
face Tom Pashley (whose straight-set victim, ISDA doubles star Clive
Leach, was understandably still fatigued by his five-game final-round
loss with partner John Russell to Ben Gould and Damien Mudge in the
biennial World Doubles in Toronto Monday night), while Razik, who
overwhelmed Richard Chin, will now meet Bernardo Samper, winner of the
only five-game match in the round of 16 when he barely edged out fellow
ISDA standout Raj Nanda, 13-11 in the fifth, after losing a 12-10
fourth game.
The other quarterfinals
are fourth seed Zac Alexander against S. L. Green finalist (for the
third year in a row) Gilly Lane in the top half, and third seed Ryan
Cuskelly against Bradley Ball after the latter survived a grinding
four-setter with John Rooney. All eight seeds were able to make their
way to tonight’s quarterfinal stage, with the semis set for 5:00
and 6:00 Saturday at the Sports Club/LA (in New York) and the final scheduled for
3:00 Sunday afternoon at the same venue.
