Full Weekend at Charleston Squash Club Invitational
by Galen Le Cheminant

May 25, 2016 - The Charleston Squash Club Invitational tournament was held on 13th - 15th May 2016. A tournament which didn't need much canvassing for participants. I put a limit of between 35-40 players to attend and, as it happens, we had 38 players!

We had three, 8 draw doubles and two singles with an 8 draw and 16 draw.

The doubles saw 21 matches over the weekend on the single doubles court at Charleston.

The weekend started on Friday morning 10am, with Golf at the Bulls Bay Golf Club. Two four balls enjoyed a fantastic round.
Squash started at 3pm and continued until 7.40pm. Guests then moved over to a Cocktail party hosted by Andrew (Sparky) Blair at his fantastic house. A Prime rib spread with white chocolate and raspberry cake to follow supplied by Ted's Butcher Block, overlooking the Charleston harbor at sunset was fabulous!

Saturday saw play start at 8.30am. Players were welcomed with Bruggers Bagles, coffee and fruit. Lunch time saw Ted's Butcher Block grilling outside in glorious 85 degrees, fresh made beef and chicken burgers...you must ask someone who came about the burgers....fantastic!

Play continued until 6.30pm when happy hour started at the Clubs bar! Then by 8pm, people spruced up and made there way to Cypress restaurant on East Bay St, Charleston, where we were served a sumptuous four courses. The Crisp wasabi tuna was excellent!

Many moved on afterwards to the delights of what Charleston's nightlife has to offer!

Sundays final play began surprisingly on time with a few sore heads, eased by bagels and coffee once again, but some quality squash was on show.

The Century final saw D. Rosen/J. Theos win over G. Le Cheminant/Sparky n four tight games. Following on was the A final, with P. Page & C. Soderstrom who had a very competitive match beating C. Fenwick & K. Hinder. The Open final saw D. Rosen & N. Johnson overcome G. Le Cheminant & J. Kacergis in four games. Steve Hall sustained an injury in the semi finals forcing him out of the final sadly.

The Open singles was won by J. Kacergis, beating J. Calderon in a very tight four games! The B final was won by P. Herring over J. Bregman in another tight four games.

Presentations were at 12.30 and winners were presented trophies and wine supplied by Mira Winery, courtesy of Jim 'Bear' Dyke.

The final part to the weekend was a round of golf at the beautiful Kiawah Islands River Course. Two four balls teed off at 2.20pm and completed the round under the warm blue Skye's. Drinks on the River terrace afterwards and then it was back to reality and a drive and fly home.

A fantastic weekend was had by all and personally, it was probably the most enjoyable tournament I've ever held. This was largely due to the generosity of the Charleston Squash Club members and being in the most beautiful fantastic place in America.

This was a benchmark for future events which will most certainly be a tournament to be put in to your calendar.
