Top Seeds Advance At Canadian Nationals by Danny Da Costa

– The 101st edition of the Canadian Squash Championships kicked off
today at the Mayfair Parkway Racquets Club in Markham, Ontario; the
first of over 340 squash players from across Canada took to the courts
to mark the opening of the tournament.
Seven of the eight men’s seeds advanced to the quarter-finals of the
tournament. Shawn Delierre of Montreal, Quebec the tournament’s
#1 seed in the Open Division won his opening match over Brian Hong of
Toronto, Ontario (11-1, 11-1, 11-5). Delierre who is ranked #38
in the World in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World
Rankings is vying for his first National Title. Defending champion and
tournament #2 seed Shahier Razik of Toronto had to withdraw due to
injury. Michael McCue of Sudbury, Ontario scored a minor upset,
defeating #8 seed Adrian Dudzicki of Toronto (11-4, 16-14, 11-9).
The Women’s Open Division also got underway with Samantha Cornett of
Ottawa, Ontario winning her opening match over Dileas MacGowan of
Toronto (11-3, 11-1, 11-6). Cornett who is ranked #34 in the
Women’s Squash Association (WSA) World Rankings is also vying for her
first Canadian Squash Championship title.
The Canadian Squash Championships are the National Championship of
squash in Canada. Participants compete across eight age categories and
four open divisions with the winners of the men’s and women’s open
divisions crowned as National Champions.
