Locals Flourish In Kuwait Open Challenger

29 May 2012 - Top-seeded Kuwaiti Abdullah Al Muzayen will be joined by unseeded compatriot Ammar Al-Tamimi in the quarter-finals of the Kuwait Open Challenger (Cup Martyr Fahad Al-Ahmad) after a good day for local players in the opening round of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event at the South Surrah Ministries Complex in Kuwait City.

Al Muzayen, looking for his second Tour win on home soil this year, despatched Pakistan's Khawaja Adil Maqbool 11-8, 15-13, 15-13.

The 24-year-old world No60 will now face unseeded Egyptian Zahed Mohamed after the 19-year-old from Alexandria battled to an 11-8, 10-12, 11-7, 11-8 victory in 52 minutes over qualifier Mohammad Hussain, a 34-year-old Kuwait-based Pakistani.

Al-Tamimi added extra local interest to the top half of the draw when he beat India's sole representative Mahesh Mangaonkar 11-5, 11-9, 4-11, 13-11 in 59 minutes.

The 23-year-old Kuwaiti number two, ranked 115 in the world, now faces Australia's third seed Rex Hedrick. The world No79 from Melbourne was stretched for 70 minutes by Ahmed Atef Abdel-Fattah before prevailing 12-10, 11-4, 9-11, 15-13 against the 18-year-old Egyptian qualifier.
