Samantha Cornett and Shawn Delierre Crowned Canadian National Champions

May 6, 2013 - MARKHAM (ON) – Shawn Delierre of Montreal, QC captured his first national squash championship on defeating Dane Sharp of Toronto, ON in a hard fought 4 game final 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9. The closely contested final saw the two combatants battled for space but Delierre’s experience proved to be too much for Sharp.

The 30 year old Delierre the #38 ranked player in the world, will represent Canada at the 2013 Men’s World Squash Team Championships from June 9 – 15, 2013 in Mulhouse, France.

Dane Sharp will compete beginning Tuesday at the Canadian National Team Selection Trials in Montreal.  Sharp will be joined by Andrew Schnell who finished in 3rd place at the Canadian Nationals, David Letourneau who finished in 5th and Graeme Schnell who finished in 6th place. The top two players from trials will join Shahier Razik and Shawn Delierre at the World Team Squash Championships. 

Samantha Cornett capped off an impressive squash season by capturing her first Canadian National title with a victory over Alex Norman of Montreal in 4 games 11-6, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9. The women’s final saw both combatants demonstrate excellent shot making and great defense.  Cornett was very determined throughout the match and showed her ability to settle down in the key moments to close out the final.  The 22 year old from Ottawa is ranked #34 in the world and won the Women’s Squash Association (WSA) Sportsmanship Award earlier this year and she will be competing at the British Open in a few weeks.

About the Canadian National Squash Championships

The Canadian Squash Championships are the National Championship of squash in Canada. Participants compete across eight age categories and four open divisions with the winners of the men’s and women’s open divisions crowned as National Champions.
