Squash Returns To Palm Springs       By Rob Dinerman

Dateline June 16th
--- After a six-year hiatus, squash has returned to the Palm Desert Athletic Club in the wake of the installation last week of a back wall in one of their racquetball courts. The 20-foot-wide court (one foot narrower than a regulation singles squash court) will have regulation squash-court lines and tin-height and is open to non-members, tourists and all squash aficionados in the area for a nominal $10 fee. The club, located just off Highway 111 at 69-300 Alessandro in Palm Desert, is approximately a 15-minute drive from Palm Springs (about 90 minutes east of Los Angeles), and also offers an outdoor lap heated swimming pool as well as a fitness room with exercise and Nautilus machines. Racquets, balls and eye goggles will be made available to those visiting the club, as will introductory lessons for beginners. The club web site is pdacfitness.com and the phone number is 760-779-1551.

Pete Johnson, a transplanted Angelino, will be available for lessons and is hopeful that the court, the only such facility in the Coachella Valley, will attract some of the many east coast, northern and international tourists who vacation at or near Palm Springs. He can be reached at 760-770-9252 by anyone wishing to schedule a lesson or to inquire further about this new squash court.
