Route 66, Day 11
by Bryan Patterson

June 28, 2015 - After the disappointment of yesterday we were hoping to make up for it – especially the Blue Lagoon!! I wanted the kids to swim as it was the most refreshing dip that you could have in this heat and I was miffed that they had not had the courage to take the plunge. So we took the van (Mark stayed back at the camp to catch up on work), and bikes back to Santa Rosa and the Blue Lagoon. Once again James and myself were the first in, and boy how beautiful was this? Cold, yet so refreshing and easy to swim and dive into.

The diving cliff was anything from 8 to 15 feet high and we both showed the kids how to do it, although James did the higher one. But I have to give them credit they all finally made it into the pool with Sidd showing the way. Go Sidd! Jeremy showed us all how to do a somersault dive and land on your back – painful! We were all set to go now after a very wonderfully cool swim. So we made our way back to where we had finished the day before and once again did a relay with either James or myself riding with two kids.

A good ride and on Route 66 which is always satisfying to be able to say that. Everyone was enjoying this ride as it had very few slopes or hills. In fact no hills at all, which was the reason for everyone enjoying it!

We arrived back close to Tucumceri and headed for the main street to buy dinner. It was Sidd’s turn to cook and he was going to cook chicken burghers. Once the ingredients had been bought we made the camp site and in fairness Sidd does a mean burgher!

Two days of below average mileage for this ride, but tomorrow we have two very long sections. The first one which is roughly 40 miles is from Tucumceri to just before the Texas border, which we will then drive over as Route 66 becomes, once again, highway 40. Once into Texas we have another 50/60 miles to ride to our camp site near Amerillo.
