World Junior Champion Amanda Sobhy, Haley Mendez, To Play

-- Harvard University women’s coach Mike Way has confirmed that defending World Juniors champion Amanda Sobhy and her current US teammate Haley Mendez will be attending Harvard in the fall and playing for the Crimson.

Joining Sobhy and Mendez as incoming freshmen will be Julianne Chu and Megan Murray. All four players are from the New York City area.

The Crimson finished second in the Ivy League last season, going 5-1 and
11-2 overall, and will be returning eleven players for the 2011-12 campaign.

Harvard Athletic Communications profiled the four incoming freshmen as follows:

Amanda Sobhy   Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore

Won the 2010 Junior World Championship, becoming the first U.S. player to capture the tournament … Ranked No. 1 in the U.S. and No. 20 in the Women's International Squash Players Association … Four-time U.S. Junior national champion … Three-time U.S. Junior Open Champion … Winner of the William T. Ketcham Award for Most Improved Player … Winner of five WISPA tour titles ... Became the youngest person to win four WISPA crowns … Winner of the PanAmerican Championships team event … Was also a four-year member of the soccer team, playing midfield … National Honor Society … Science National Honor Society … Foreign Language Honor Society … Madrigal Singers Choir … Other interests include traveling, music, playing any type of sport and going to the beach.


Haley Mendez   Brooklyn, N.Y./Packer Collegiate Institute

Three-time U.S. Nationals finalist and three-time member of U.S. National team … U.S. Open finalist … Competed as a member of the men's squash team as the No. 2 all four years of high school … Served as team captain senior year … Represented the U.S. at the World Junior Championships in 2009-11 … Garnered the Baird E. Haney and All Casino Awards … Received the U.S. Squash Deroy Sportsmanship Award … Was the 2010 Frank Millet Champion … Was ranked No. 1 on the U.S. Girl's U17 and U19 teams … Was a 2009 U.S. Open Finalist … Four-year U.S. Squash Scholar-Athlete … Member of the Cum Laude Society … Member of the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society … President of the Math and Art Clubs in high school … Volunteered at Street Squash Summer Camps … Also enjoys travelling and photography … Mother, Leslie, was the captain of the field hockey and ice hockey team at Wesleyan University … Other interests include travel and photography.


Julianne Chu   New York, N.Y./The Chapin School

Member of the U.S. Junior National team in 2009 … Played the No. 1 position at The Chapin School … Also the No. 1 player on the badminton team … Represented Team USA in the CanAm: Battle of the Border … Three-time Hyder Trophy champion … Won the Athletic Association of Independent Schools 2010 badminton tournament and led team to AAIS badminton team championships in 2008 and 2010 … Two-time U.S. Squash Scholar-Athlete … Earned magna cum laude in National Latin Examination … Sister, Elizabeth, is the captain for the Columbia squash team … Sister, Jennifer, was a member of the Cornell squash team and graduated in 2010 … Other interests include travel, culture and food.


Megan Murray   Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville

Three-time U.S. Squash Scholar-Athlete … Qualified for the U.S. Team for Battle of the Border/Ontario-American Challenge … Won the Spanish Junior Open in 2006 … Ranked No. 12 out of the top 16 U.S. junior women heading into 2011 World Team playoffs … Was a four-year member and two-time captain of lacrosse team … Was named all-league for lacrosse three times … CitySquash volunteer … Served on Bronxville Youth Council … AP Scholar Award recipient … Scholastic Achievement Award … Two-time high school lacrosse all-academic pick … Mother, Caroline Murray '87, was a member of the Harvard volleyball team … Grandmother, Alexandra Self, earned a degree from HRPBA in 1960 … Grandfather, W. Lee Young, graduated from Harvard Business School in 1961.
