July 17, 2011- Canada's
Samantha Cornett claimed her second title on the women's professional
squash tour when she beat Korea's Ahn Eun Chan in four tight games to
win the Tasmanian Open in Hobart on Sunday.
Cornett, who lost to the Korean in the second round of the Victorian
Open last week, played some superb squash to win the final 11-6, 11-7,
9-11, 11-8 and add the Hobart crown to the title she won in Guatemala
in May.
The 20-year-old Cornett has been training under former world number one
Jonathon Power at the National Squash Academy in Toronto for the past
12 months and said the hard work was starting to pay off.
"I feel so good – this whole week I've been playing really, really well," she said after the final.
"It's so encouraging to have these kind of results.
"I've played on the tour for five years, but only seriously for the
last two years, but I've never been able to win the matches I wasn't
supposed to.
"I've beaten players I was expected to, but not beaten those ranked
higher than me, so it is nice to start winning those matches now."
Cornett, who ousted top seed Kylie Lindsay of New Zealand in the
semi-finals, changed her game plan against Ahn after her loss in
Melbourne last week.
"Everyone told me to play slow against her, but that obviously didn't
work in Melbourne, so I changed up and found playing fast works a bit
better," she said.
She now has a week off before playing the New South Wales Open in Sydnec
