Route 66 Charity Bike Ride, Day 17
by Bryan Patterson

June 30, 2015 - Still a rest day, which was a good thing, as tomorrow we would be riding a tough 60+ miles to Stroud Lake mid-way to Tulsa, camping there and then hoping to get into Tulsa on the next afternoon which again is somewhere in the region of 60+ miles.

Right now we had to collect a cell phone at the World renowned Will Rogers Airport, from American Airlines lost luggage.

We made the airport and found the lost luggage department, but no one could help, so up to the ticketing desk to ask there. Meanwhile James had texted that he had talked with an Eric of AA who would be able to help, and sure enough he did. The phone plus charger was found and would be exchanged for the Hualapei rock that James had inadvertently taken back to NYC and which was really Lill Missy’s. She was real mad! Curiously enough I didn’t see any World Cities on the arrivals or departures boards in the airport – interesting!

Now to get the bike from big Louis at THE Bike Shop. He had done a terrific job and the wheel was good to go plus he had adjusted the gear shift and said that this would make it easier to change gear and maybe get to Chicago faster – not sure about the last part!!

A quick pit stop for coffee and cold drinks for myself Giselle and Sidd. This particular street had been a real auto sales street many years ago, and one of the interesting features was there were plaques in the sidewalk saying Automobile Alley. One of these said “Clyde Barrow of Bonnie and Clyde fame wrote a letter to Henry Ford in April 1934 saying that….”For sustained speed and freedom from trouble the Ford has every other car skinned, and even if my business hasn’t been strictly legal it don’t hurt anything to tell you what a fine car you got in the V8”. Maybe we need V8 rather than bikes?

Finally we picked up some organic food from a wonderful deli that we stumbled across while driving back to Oklahoma East camp site. Looking forward to the meal later.

A good dinner and an early night as we now had all the bikes ready and we all wanted to get back in the saddle, on the road and along Route 66. Interestingly the camp site had two tornado shelters which were dug into the ground with only air funnels showing. Thankfully no tornadoes!!
