- Winnipeg’s Alix Younger advanced to tonight’s round of 32 of the World Juniors Individuals with a gritty four-game win yesterday (11-6 11-7 9-11 11-6) over Katie Smith of England.

Younger, the 2010 Canadian national junior champion, was not selected for the junior team currently representing Canada at these Boston world championships. The controversial decision was likely based on a wrist injury Alix incurred, which she has since had surgically repaired.

So the 18-year-old University of Manitoba student decided to play the event "unattached", and now finds herself one of two Canadian players (along with current junior champion Danielle Letourneau) still alive in the draw.

“It was a great match - Katie played very well and I wish her luck in her upcoming matches,” said Alix.

“As for myself ," she said, “it felt unbelievably good to be back on court and playing as well as I did. After losing the third game I just told myself to hang in there and keep going after the ball, keep the pace up and not to give up. Most importantly I told myself between points to believe in myself and my game. I am extremely happy to be one of two Canadians left in the main round, and I am looking extremely forward to tomorrow’s match no matter the outcome.”

Alix will face 9/16-seed Anaka Alankamony of India, who defeated the USA’s Olivia Fiechter in yesterday’s round-of-64.

The match is scheduled for 6:15 pm, EST.
