Haley Mendez of New York City joins US teammates Amanda Sobhy and
Olivia Blatchford in the World Juniors round-of-16 after a stunning
straight-set win (11-8 12-10 11-9) yesterday over #1 Australian
junior Tamika Saxby.
Defending champion and second -seed Sobhy demolished Ho Tze-Lok
of Hong Kong (11-2 11-2 11-2), while Blatchford, the 3/4 seed, battled
through a tight three (11-9 12-10 11-8) against Ka-Yi Lee, also from
Hong Kong.
#1 Canadian Danielle Letourneau lost a lengthy crowd-pleaser to 9/16
seed Tesni Evans of Wales (11-9 8-11 12-10 11-8), and a nice comeback
run ended for Winnepeg’s Alix Younger, playing unattached in her
final junior tournament, as she fell to 9/16 seed Anaka
Alankamony of India (11-8 11-4 11-8).
In an intriguing contest that US team manager and former world #1
Natalie Grainger said “might be the match of the day for the
US”, young Sabrina Sobhy was overcome by the experienced #1
English junior and WISPA performer Emily Whitlock, the 5/8 seed (11-5,
11-1, 11-3).
And American Maria Ubina, after winning both her qualifying and first
round match in straight games, was ousted by 9/16 seed Megan Craig of
New Zealand (11-6 11-5 11-1).
