- Maria Fernanda Vazquez of Mexico has emerged as the lone North
American to bring home gold from the prestigious Pioneer Junior Squash
Cup in Cologne, Germany, after straight-setting Elin Harlow of Wales in
the final of the Girls U-15 division.
She is the first-ever Mexican player to win a Pioneer Cup championship in any division.
Vazquez, from Mexico City, entered the tournament unseeded but shocked top-seed Tinne
Gilis of Belgium in three in the first round, setting up her run to the
finals. The only games she lost in the tournament came in a
highly-charged quarterfinal against 8th-seeded Chloe Chemtob of the US,
which Vazquez won 16-14 in the fifth.
Other stellar performances by North Americans were turned in by
Americans Maria Elena Ubina and Dylan Murray, and Canadian Mike McCue.
Ubina, seeded 17th, reached the final of the Girls U-19’s before
falling to top-seed and WISPA #55 Emily Whitlock of England.
Murray won five matches, including a qualifier, in the U-17 Boys before
succumbing to top seeded Osama Khalid Khalifa of Egypt in the semis.
McCue reached the semi-finals of the Boys U-19’s, losing to #1 seeded Declan James of England.
