Top seeds cruise into Barbados semis

July 6, 2012 - All the top four seeded players have made it safely through to their respective Men’s A semi-finals as action continued in the First Citizens Barbados Squash Open, which is being held this week at the Barbados Squash Club (BSC), Marine Gardens.
The top seed and defending champion, Richard Chin (GUY) comfortably defeated national representative, Don Benn, 11-4, 11-6, 11-1 and will now face Trinidadian opposition in the second of the men’s semi-finals since the #3/4 seed, Colin Ramasra (TRI), defeated the ever improving Kevin Bailey (SVG) in four hard fought games 6-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-5.
The other semi-final will be contested between the #2 seed and six-time former national champion, Shawn Simpson and his close friend and rival, Gavin Cumberbatch, who is the current Barbados national champion and a former Caribbean Men’s champion. Cumberbatch, who is also seeded here at #3/4, defeated former eight-time national champion, Mark Sealy, in straight games 11-8, 11-5, 11-7 while Simpson repelled the challenge of Gavin’s younger brother, Rhett Cumberbatch, also in straight games 11-6, 11-7, 11-3.
In the Ladies semi-finals this evening (Friday), the top seed and defending champion, Karen Meakins, will face fellow national team playerAlex Jordan, who has been seeded at #3/4, in a repeat of this year’s National Championship final while the #2 seed, Cheri-Ann Parris, a former two-time Caribbean U-19 champion will face another former Caribbean U-19 champion, the #3/4 seeded, Nadia McCarthy.
Matches will begin at the BSC this afternoon (Friday) from 4:45 p.m. with the Ladies and Men’s A semi-finals following one another, beginning at 6:15 p.m. All matches are being held at the Barbados Squash Club, Marine Gardens, Hastings and admission to the venue for the public is free.
