Amanda Sobhy To Face Joey Chan Today In Australian Open 1st Round

August 15, 2012 - Harvard sophomore Amanda Sobhy will take on 14th seeded Joey Chan of Hong Kong in first round action today at the $50K WSA Australian Open in Canberra.

Amanda, the 19-year-old former world junior champion, is the only North American main draw participant, male or female, in the 2012 Australian.

Sobhy is currently world ranked at #26, following a career high of #17 in April of 2011.

Chan comes into the match ranked 17th.

Amanda dominated the US Nationals and WSA Capitol Open in March. In European play this summer she lost to Raneem El Weleily and Camille Serme respectively in the first rounds of the British Open in London and the Des Pyramides Open in Paris.

The 24-year-old Chan reached the semis of the Montreal Atwater event in March, and she won the Buhler Cup in Hong Kong in April.

Today's winnner will likely face world #3 Jenny Duncalf.
