USA Men's Coach Paul Assaiante Checks In From Germany from DailySquashReport.com
August 21, 2011 - On the eve of the Men's World Team Championships, US Head Coach Paul Assaiante told Daily Squash Report:
We are in Paderborn, Germany and excited to kick off today against the Ukraine.
We are fortunate to have Julian at #1, and the depth of Chris Gordon at #3 and Todd Harrity as our alternate.
Todd will play three for us today as we give Gilly the day off.
Our pool is tough, in that the Swiss are good and Italy is a very seasoned team.
During the matches, Gareth Webber and I will be quite active, as the in-match adjustments will be important.
Making sure the playes stay calm and focused on basics will be important.
We are not emotionally involved in the match as the players are, so we
can see simple things that will not occur to a player in the heat
of the game.
The players must, however, buy into the fact that what we are suggesting is valuable for them.
This takes time and continuity, which is something that we have not had enough of.
So the key will be the in-match adjustments, and our ability to present
them simply and in ways that the boys believe is correct, and go from
there.
Today will set the tone for the week.
Switzerland tomorrow is huge, and Italy on Tuesday will determine if we
make the Round of 16, and whether we come in as a one or two-seed from
our pool.
