Toronto’s Mike McCue, Michelle Gemmell Take Home 2011 North American Juniors Titles
August 22, 2011-
Over 100 juniors from Canada, the U.S, Mexico and Portugal competed in
the 2011 North American Junior Open from Friday to Sunday at the
National Squash Academy at Downsview Park in Toronto.
Tournament organizer Mark Sachvie opted to use an unconventional draw
system in order to maximize the number of matches each player would
get. Each event either began with a round robin followed by a Monrad
crossover draw, or started as a draw and separated into pools after a
qualifying round. In any case, players participated in four to seven
matches!
There were hopes of home winners in both u19 divisions as Mike McCue
and Michelle Gemmell were top seeds. After winning her round robin
pool, Gemmell beat Emily Richmond (Toronto) in the semis before taking
the title against Rachel Leizman (U.S.) in a three game final. Leizman
defeated Ailsa Agnew (Toronto) in her semi. In the boys event, McCue
beat Cameron Seth (Fergus) 3-1 in the first semifinal, while Mostafa
Hamada (Egypt) bested Josh Sekhar (Toronto) by the same score in the
other semi. The final, played on the stadium glass court, saw defending
champion McCue defeat Hamada 3-0 in increasingly convincing fashion.
A very successful event on the whole, which has doubled in size since its inception in 2008.
