Jonathon Power Dropped From WSF Ambassador Programme After Alleged Failed Drug Test Surfaces from DailySquashReport.com
August 25, 2011- The World Squash
Federation announced yesterday that it was withdrawing North American
legend and former World #1 player Jonathon Power from its newly-created
Ambassador Development Tour, based on a June 2010 failed drug test.
World Squash Federation Chief Executive Andrew Shelley confirmed the decision to DailySquashReport:
“Yes, we have withdrawn Jonathon Power from the Ambassador Development Tour to Latvia later this year.
“Because WSF takes a zero tolerance approach to drugs, sadly we
have concluded that given Jonathon failed in a test for a recreational
drug, even though it came well after his official retirement as a
Professional Squash Association player in March 2006, it would be
inappropriate for him to be part of the Ambassador Development
Tour. Squash has an exemplary track record of being a drug free
sport and we are absolutely committed to maintaining this. “
According to Shelley, Power tested positive for cannabis while playing
in an Italian League match in June 2010. He said that Power served a
nine-month ban imposed by the Italian Squash Federation, which
precluded him from playing in Italy between November 2010 and June 2011.
The inaugural WSF Ambassador Development Tour was announced earliler
this month. Jonathon Power and women’s World #1 Nicol David were
named
as the lead figures in the program.
Power is the first and only North American to become number-one in
the world. He captured 37 career titles, including the Tournament of
Champions four times, one British Open and one World Open.
