2011-12 ISDA Doubles Preview And Projected Schedule by Rob Dinerman for DailySquashReport.com
August 29, 2011-
James Hewitt, Executive Director of the International Squash Doubles
Association (ISDA), has released the tentative schedule for the 2011-12
season. This will be the 12th full season for the ISDA, which was
co-founded by Hewitt and Gary Waite in January 2000. The schedule is
brimming with significant tournaments since its two most lucrative
events, the Briggs Cup and the Kellner Cup, both of which are biennial,
will both take place this season, namely the Briggs Cup, which has had
main-draw purses of $100,000 each of the four times it has been held,
and the Kellner Cup, which has offered a purse of as high as $80,000 in
the recent past. Almost all of the major annual tour stops, such as the
North American Open (in Greenwich), Boston, the U. S. Pro (in
Wilmington), the 64th David Johnson Memorial (in Brooklyn), the Big
Apple Open (at the New York Athletic Club), the Players Championship
(in Long Island and New York) and additional events in Philadelphia,
Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Vancouver and Toronto, will be returning as part
of the seven-month (from October to May) ISDA schedule. There will also
be an event in Scotland, the Scottish Cup, in late September, which
will mark the first time an ISDA tournament has been held outside North
America.
Until proven otherwise, the key question defining the
competitive environment entering this autumn is whether Damien Mudge
and Ben Gould, who went undefeated (38-0) wire-to-wire in their debut
season as partners in 2010-11 after having been fierce rivals for many
years, will be able to extend this domination in the face of a
compellingly talented set of determined contenders. This latter group
includes Matt Jenson and Clive Leach, the second-ranked pairing from
last season, closely followed by Chris Walker and Mark Chaloner,
two-time finalists last season, St. Louis runners-up and former Trinity
College teammates Manek Mathur and Yvain Badan, plus two tandems,
Preston Quick/Jonny Smith and John Russell/Greg Park, who just formed
in the past few weeks and hence will be partnering up for the first
time when the season kicks off.
