Canada’s Shawn Delierre Quietly Posts

Overlooked in Canada’s disappointing 15th place finish in
Saturday’s world team championship playoffs in Germany was the
stellar tournament-long play of Quebec’s Shawn Delierre.
Delierre was a perfect 5-0 in his matches in the #2 slot for Team
Canada, losing only to tough South African and PSA #35 Stephen
Coppinger in an attritional four-game battle while stepping up to the #1
position.
The steady Delierre would have been a dangerous force in the third and
deciding match versus the US, but he never got on the court as the
Americans clinched at #1 and #3 in the round-of-16 encounter.
Mexico’s #1 Cesar Salazar played above his PSA #55 ranking and
also turned in a strong performance, going an improbable 4-0 before
running out of gas and losing his last three matches. His straight-set
win over Italy’s #1 Stephane Galifi in the round-of-16 gave the
Mexicans a shot at their first ever quarterfinal berth, but Eric
Galvez’s comeback effort from two-love down fell just short in
the deciding match.
#1 American and PSA #32 Julian Illingworth played every match due to an
injury to teammate Gilly Lane and finished at 3-4, while
Canadas’s #1 and world #29 Shahier Razik won only his final match
of the event to end up 1-4, though in fairness Razik dealt with
cramping issues throughout the tournament.
Intercollegiate champion Todd Harrity made the most of his first taste of big-time international competition and wound up 3-2.
