Latasha Khan Into Vancouver WISPA 2nd Round -
Ranieri, Blatchford Ousted from DailySquashReport.com
August 5, 2011-
Latasha Khan of the US and Samantha Teran of Mexico were the only North
Americans still standing following the first round of the $28K WISPA
Sun and Surf in Vancouver last night.
Khan handled Canadian Alexandra Norman 3-0 in 26 minutes, while Teran beat former Canadian #1 Melanie Jans, also in three.
Seventh-seed Olivia Blatchford of the US was upset by Misaki Kobayashi of Japan, 10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 11-5.
Current Canadian #1 Miranda Ranieri fell to New Zealand’s Jaclyn Hawkes in a tough three.
Jericho Tennis Club Head Pro Shauna Flath filed this report on the first round:
Another great night here at Jericho on the patio and on the squash court!
Engy beautiful player it is really good to see her on the court after a
absence from tour events since October of last year. She sealed the
match in style with excellent shot selection and defeated Carolyn
Russell in 3 straight convincing games.
Misaki and Olivia had a battle with back and forth rallies but Masaki
prevailed in 4 as Olivia is a bit battered and tired just coming off
the World Jr Team Championships.
Heba and Nayelly had a great match as well with Heba showing her
quickness and her fantastic working boast as it proved to be very
effective against Nayelly. Heba is well rested with finishing the match
in 17mins.
Lucie Fialova the hard hitting lefty from put up a fight by taking the
first game from Victoria 13-11 but Lust turned it around and played a
much more tactical game and won the next 3 to take the match 3-1.
Latasha was just too strong tonight for Alex with great ball
placement and took control in the match to close out all games to take
the match 3-0.
Samantha played solid squash to win over Mel in 3 but not without a
fantastic effort from Canada’s former #1 player. It
was a treat for the fans as Mel played a great week of squash and we
will miss her as her Mark and Ryder are off to Florida this fall.
Canada’s new #1 played fantastic against Jaclyn and put up a
great fight for 3 hard games. Jaclyn prevailed and displayed why
she is the #1 seed with a 11-4; 11-8 11-8 performance.
The sun is out, the tournament is full and everyone is having a
fantastic time. We are all looking forward to the matchups
tomorrow!
